Hortense, a successful and well-adjusted Black optometrist who was adopted at birth, goes in search of her biological mother. The woman in question, Cynthia, is an unhappy white factory worker who has a difficult relationship with her other daughter Roxanne and resents the lack of attention paid to her by her brother Maurice, a photographer who lives in the suburbs with his aloof wife Monica.
