Up there with the best of the best.

During a routine air patrol, two U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat fighters encounter two Soviet MiG-28 fighters. The American pilots manage to put the Soviet planes on the run, but pilot Bill "Cougar" Cortell (John Stockwell) goes into shock. The second pilot, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise), rescues him from the situation. Maverick is not well liked by his superiors. He is a sort of adventurous mad dog. He lost his father in flight during the Vietnam War.

After the incident, the commander had to send Cougar to the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School. Faced with this admission of failure, he sends Maverick to this school. There, Maverick met up with Nick "Goose" Bradshaw to perfect their air combat skills. Their main rivals are Tom "Iceman" Kazanski (Val Kilmer) and his navigator, Ron "Slider" Kerner (Rick Rossovich). These young pilots are all trained by commanders Heatherly "Jester" (Michael Ironside) and Metcalf "Viper" (Tom Skerritt). Metcalf flew with Maverick's father in Vietnam. Maverick soon becomes interested in astrophysicist Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Their education will prove increasingly difficult. And accidents happen...
