About this movie

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) comes a gothic romance masterpiece starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. I thought this movie was really well made honestly. The creature effects for the ghosts were visually stunning and the performances by most of the actors were above average. While watching you realize that Hiddleston is the right choice to play this character and Jessica Chastain is amazing and horrifying, I want her to do more horror movies or at least play a villain in something soon. I only gave this movie 3 stars though and that's mostly because it feels very derivative mostly of the shining.

It wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting more of a horror movie having to do with ghosts since that's what the previews led me to believe it was going to be. Even though it wasn't, (there are still ghosts, but not as many as the previews lead you to believe) this movie was hauntingly beautiful. It's been a year since I've seen it, and it's still making a lasting impact. I'm always wanting to watch it though I haven't been able to, the scenery is beautiful, the house is beyond gorgeous, Tom broke my heart quite a bit in , he movie but it somehow made me love him more. He was a great choice as an actor. Great movie.

Those claiming this isn't horror are probably just too used to modern gorefests to know good subtle horror when they see it. This is a GOTHIC horror movie, which means it's about examining what separates humanity from the monster, blurring those lines, and seeing just who the true monster is, and on that note Crimson Peak succeeds immensely. It's also very well written, well acted, resoundingly atmospheric, and just a visual treat to look at every single frame even when it does get more gruesome.
