About this movie

The sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit horror movie. In the aftermath of the shocking events in "Sinister," a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity. I enjoyed the first movie quite a bit. I just couldn't get into this one. The cheap use of multiple jump "scares" and the fact that a group of adults run like cowards from a small child.... The ending was pretty cheesy overall to me. Based on the success of the first one they pushed out a poorly written second one. This movie is best to wait until it shows up on Netflix or a similar service. Wish I would've passed but I took the bait just like every other Sinister 1 fan.

I think this movie is underrated. It wasn't as SHOCKING as the first one, but I think that's just because the first one was such an original concept. This movie does feature Bagul more, but in a weird way, his moments didn't hold nearly as much impact as they did in the first one. If you only kind of liked the first movie, then you should probably skip this one and pretend there was never a sequel. If you loved the first one, like me, then I would recommend Sinister 2. Though it lacks in the shock and awe value that the first film brought, this movie does a good job of giving some history to Bagul in a pretty eerie way and the family murder films kicked it up a notch and did show slightly more blood/gore. My biggest complaint is some of the acting. I love that they brought back Deputy So and So to bring some continuity to the sequel aside from Bagul, but his acting seemed a little over the top. The Bagul children were featured WAY too much and it almost got too repetitive for me and the main Bagul child, Milo, had a pretty lackluster performance. The rest of the cast was pretty solid though.

The issue with hitting cinematic gold with an initial release is always trying to top it. We've seen this go wrong with Silent Hill 2, Insidious 3, as well as other horror movies especially when they decide to prerequal. I was hesitant but I'm glad I decided to watch it. I liked it quite a bit. I love the reprised role of the deputy and we got to see more family murders this film plus more of Buguul.
