About this movie

Andrea Arnold's WUTHERING HEIGHTS is an excitingly fresh and distinct take on the classic novel by Emily Bront‘.
An epic love story that spans childhood well into the young adult years, the film follows Heathcliff, a boy taken in by a benevolent Yorkshire farmer, Earnshaw. Living in Earnshaw's home, Heathcliff develops a passionate relationship with the farmer's teenage daughter, Catherine, inspiring the envy and mistrust of his son, Hindley. When Earnshaw passes away, the now-grown characters must finally confront the intense feelings and rivalries that have built up throughout their years together.

As a Bronte fan, I've seen many adaptations of Wuthering Heights. This one is a dark, gritty, artistic, and unique film. The film depicts the animal cruelty that is described in the book which is often overlooked in the films, for obvious reasons. I also thought the contrasts were excellent. Many closeups of nature and animals heightened the grandeur of the moor for the audience. I wasn't bothered that they brought race into the story because it felt believable and gave Heathcliff an interesting twist. If you're a purist you probably won't like this. It doesn't follow the book well as it focuses on Heathcliff's sorrows and joys only with Cathy. It wasn't a bad one time film but there were definitely scenes that made me uncomfortable. I would have liked this warning before watching so, in case you're squeamish ***Spoiler*** The scene when Heathcliff goes to Cathy's corpse, they added necrophilia to the story. So, there's that awkwardness to ruin the romance for you.

If you have seen the original... you will understand why this pales in comparison. The original is outstanding. Both are beautiful in how they depict that the soul lives on after life here. :)

One of my favorite modern versions of Wuthering Heights..engaging, strong actors, and beautiful cinematography.
