About this movie

A non-religious hair stylist in her mid-20s, Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette) receives a rosary from her mother and begins speaking in other voices, being attacked by unseen forces, and developing stigmata, bleeding wounds on her wrists, feet and side that are associated with the Passion of Christ. A Vatican Cardinal (Jonathan Pryce) examines her, and sends Father Andrew Kiernan (Gabriel Byrne) to investigate Frankie to ascertain if the events and stigmata are indeed a miracle from God. However, Father Andrew quickly finds that the need to verify the Devine is far less important than saving Frankie’s life. Score by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

I appreciated that this carried the alternate ending instead of the ending the released version had. I was a bit surprised with a review here that seemed to carry the assumption this was a pro-Catholic movie. Instead, the focus seems to be more on the dangers of the trappings of the Church. I can't speak for the writers on what message they were trying to convey, but I walked away from this with a much more positive view of spirituality, which means I was able to suspend my disbelief on the fiction of the movie and enjoy the incredible acting within. I bought it because I feel it's worth watching again.
