It was sad that the message of this story didn't take root in the post-soviet world. However DS9 has an interesting response to this, in the form of the Klingon-Cardassian war of 2372. It suggests that the Klingons (Russians) don't wish to become more like the Federation (The West). So while peace is preferable and possible, ultimately it may not be everlasting.

You couldn't ask for a better final mission for the original crew. Very emotional at the end knowing its the last time youll see them in action. Many themes in this film can be put to reality such as "fear of change". The way it all turned out in the end was brilliant. 2 and 6 remain the greatest trek films ever in my opinion with first contact right behind as runner up.

The peace theme is a bit cheesy, especially the execution, but it had to come in light of TNG with a klingon officer on board. Love Meyer's way (like in II) of making you feel like you're on a true military vessel. Definitely approaching retirement for this crew, but they still handled themselves and the ship well.
