About this movie

Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, this powerful film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the mixed-race daughter of a British Navy officer raised by her wealthy great-uncle (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). Although racism prevents her from enjoying the full advantages of her upbringing, Belle's love for an idealistic young man sparks change that may impact generations to come.

Without doubt, this is the most beautifully crafted cinematic masterpiece I have seen in quite some time. I enjoy films that show life in this period, and the story was intriguing. I appreciated the propriety this movie was scripted with, as families can watch it and discuss the racial/tribal ramifications of what was going on in the world's racial climate of that day. It invites you politely in, so you can witness as close to first-hand, what so many have died to protect and the laws we so often take for granted. I am half Mexican, and I married an Indian man I now reside in India with. These questions will be coming up, about the pigment of my future children's skin; and this movie, I believe, will help me explain some things to them one day. The race or tribe of one's ancestors should never give us privilege, and certainly should never allow us to mistreat or demean anyone else. This film shows that beautifully, with several contrasts of other arguments, even from well-meaning hearts. "I won't hold your African heritage against you, imperial British is obviously so much stronger within your blood." Not word for word, but being biracial, this reached my own heart. Well done!!!

I love that it's a true story about overcoming cultural insanity and irrational racism, which true love always conquerors and proves futile... Life is so short; so glad these two, and many others were not denied their chance for marital fulfillment, because now, they're both gone, but not the memory of their struggle, or their love. In the end, that's what really matters. How precious the dash between our birth and death dates... priceless...

It has been some time since I have seen a movie that I would take the time to recommend... Belle is a cross between Pride and Prejudice and Amazing Grace, which means its is a love story with historical intrigue. If you're looking for a movie with action and guns... then watch Captain America Winter Soldier, but if you would prefer one based on an inspirational true story with great acting then you will enjoy Belle, especially if you are a romantic with a sense of justice. I for one highly recommend it.
