The Colony

Real shocker, I could really get into this movie! Very appropriate with the global warming and zombie combination, truly terrifying and excellent cinematography for an independent film. Production was the most admirable along with the acting, and though the plot and editing fell a little short I would still be hard pressed not to give this film 5 stars. It is clear that the film fell apart a bit as the initial conceptualization of a reality found itself exasperated by the vehicle provided as far as romance or timeline. I would argue that the ending most appropriately did reach a climax, however, and some late stagnation does not remove from the astounding nature of this independent film. I was especially terrified with the imagery, and the actors were excellent in reproducing the blatant surprise and disgust, even overwhelmed beyond the point of belief when colony 5 is found to have been wiped out. A man stands butchering live and shortly deceased bodies as other zombies groan, twitch, and stir in anticipation of their own moment being butchered as well. This was a strong moment in which the surreal met disgusting morbidity in a manner not well rivaled by contemporary cinema.

This was a rehash of several old time Sci-fi movies. In the end, I was disappointed with the predictability of the plot and the poor acting. Fishburne is killed off in the first 15 minutes, which for him probably was a relief. I'm glad I rented this piece of crap instead of buying it. Having it stay in my collection forever would be a constant reminder of the time I wasted watching it.

The idea, overall aesthetic, and the suspense build up was great; it reminded me a lot of alien and aliens. When the movie finally started the action though, it went down hill fast with poor decisions by the characters and sudden event changes. The ending was anticlimactic and without closure.
