About this movie

Set against the music of Belle and Sebastian, Daniel Ribeiro's coming of age tale, THE WAY HE LOOKS is a fun and tender story about friendship and the complications of young love. Leo is a blind teenager who’s fed up with his overprotective mother and the bullies at school. Looking to assert his independence, he decides to study abroad to the dismay of his best friend, Giovana. When Gabriel, the new kid in town, teams with Leo on a school project, new feelings blossom in him that make him reconsider his plans. Meanwhile, Giovana, grows jealous of this new found companionship as tensions mount between her and Leo.

My friend informed me of this movie and I must say I am not disappointed in the slightest. I really enjoy "The coming of age" movie types and this went way past my expectations. I would love to see a squeal or a continuation of this story. It was worth adding to my collection. I just watched it yesterday on Netflix. Yes it is on Netflix, but I think it is worth adding to your movie collect. For those that think it is just another cheese movie, please watch. I am not into the "cheese"movie scene and this didn't hit anywhere near those moments. You will enjoy this. Maybe not to a 5 star level, but you will not be disappointed. If you do not know Portuguese, don't watch this movie while tired. You need to be awake and ready to read. Still worth every penny. Enjoy.

So many gay movies get caught up in the drama and societal stigmas around being gay, that they neglect the fun, light hearted and more often than not awkward feelings of coming to age as a gay teen. This film captures, what I believe, to be the heart of coming to understand your personal feelings. While gay is a dominant topic of this film, the main character's desires to be on his own, and become himself are a true driving force of this film. Perfectly painted and amplified by his inability to see. I find this characteristic to be the perfect metaphor for the uncertainty most in-the-closet youth face at this stage in their lives. A perfect film. One you'll want to own so you can watch it over and over again.

IMAGINE BEING BLIND, a teenager, being bullied at school and suddenly realizing that you're gay on top of everything. All Leo wanted was a kiss. And the last person he thought would give it to him was his "friend" Gabriel. This film is an awesome coming of age and coming out experience. I loved seeing these two guys together. I wish they had made a sequel.
