About this movie

From award-winning director Keiichi Hara (Colorful) and Japanese powerhouse Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell) comes a remarkable story of the daughter behind one of history's most famous artists. As all of Edo flocks to see the work of the revered painter Hokusai, his daughter O-Ei toils diligently, creating the paintings sold under her father's name. Shy in public, in the studio O-Ei is brash and uninhibited. Seeking to come into her own as an artist, O-Ei sets out into the bustling city of Edo (present-day Tokyo), where she encounters spirits, dragons, con men and traders. While not perfect, it was still beautiful. Many scenes were just perfectly done from the animation to the pacing and it sucked my in during those scenes. However the movie isn't always that good and a few changing art styles come up, some parts that have modern music that can really take me out because of the contrast to music in the rest of it. And there's really no plot too, while it clearly isn't the point to have one it just sort of just end. That's unfortunate because I really was hugely invested in every character and it felt like it could go on for ages and still be great. For what it is, it can be hugely enjoyable even through the obvious flaws.

It was...ok. It felt like less of a story and more of a series of vignettes surrounding the character of "miss hokusai". Still, i found the characters interesting, and the art is good (especially during the paint sequences)
