I just can't watch this movie anymore. I admit the reason is peculiar and semi-obsessive, but it's the reason: Grace Kelly's fake mid-Atlantic accent. I once saw a TV interview with one of her brothers who was asked what he thought about her film career. As I recall, he said the Kelly family was immensely proud but that no one had been able to figure out where she picked up that ridiculous accent. (The Kellys are from Philadelphia.) Indeed, it's that accent that ruins her acting for me -- and particularly when she is cast against the authentic Gary Cooper. The fake plastic Kelly counterposed to the authentic Cooper. Not a good match.

High Noon is all about time. Within its hour and a half run time, it manages to capture a mere hour of a man's life. Time is quickly beating against him with the impending clock, taunting him. This hour is filled with choices that reflect him as a courageous old man who battles the odds despite what everyone thinks and says. He is the alturistic hero of the west and does it not for his own glory, but because it is the right thing to. It will truly be remembered as a staple of the classic American Western.

An interesting and unique thing about High Noon is that it takes place in approximately "real time." Also, the casting of Katy Jurado as a strong Latina character was courageous. Grace Kelly is spectacular, in every sense of the word.
