About this movie

A former student who's now a superstar actor tells an audience of millions that Howard is gay. Poor Howard. He's outted when he didn't know he was in! Kevin Kline plays stunned Howard, scrambling to go forth with his wedding to devoted Emily (Joan Cusack) and doing his frantic best to assert his manliness.

A good idea, badly executed. The issue is that in 1997 viewers weren't ready for actual discussions of gay sexuality, not even in g-rated terms. Not even in a comedy. So we get another sexless gay character with all the stereotypical nonsexual hobbies and interests people associate with gays. For most of the film, he doesn't seem interested in men at all. So rather than read as a gay man, Kline's character reads as slightly effeminate straight man, who is bullied gay by an entire town.

I still, for the life of me don't understand WHY this film is so popular. It is so apparent that this film was made to attract the straight audience but does such a pandering, limp wristed attempt at it, it's insulting. VERY insulting. At least Joan Cusack is believable as the "why won't he make a woman outta me" forever lady in waiting! But as an overall, this film is pretty sad and VERY embarrassing as a gay themed film.
