About this movie

Oscar® winner Matt Damon ("Good Will Hunting," "Invictus") stars in "Hereafter," directed by Academy Award® winner Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby," "Unforgiven") from a screenplay by two time Oscar® nominee Peter Morgan ("Frost/Nixon," "The Queen"). "Hereafter" tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might or must exist in the hereafter.

The movie held my interest from beginning to end. The emotional affect of losing someone close and wondering where they are was portrayed so well.

A difficult theme to treat: the public (and the execrable public intellectuals) typically divide into arrogant scoffers or mawkish fantasizers. Clint Eastwood, however, is respectful and moreover treats honestly and seriously humans' need to understand death and the loss of the beloved who have pass over into death. While he treats with proper disdain the charlatans, he gives an honest voice to those who grieve, something which the postmodernist cynic (comes from the Latin meaning currish or dog-like) with his empty "superiority" is incapable of. Eastwood also here shows the deep understanding that the character that Matt Damon plays pays a heavy price having one foot in the beyond and the other in the everyday world. In the end, he leaves any "final answer" unanswered, which is appropriate for our current cultural awareness, but at the same time finds a very human answer to the dilemma of the psychic wanting to find his way back to normalcy.
