The Order (aka The Sin Eater)

A conflicted priest is investigating his defrocked mentor's "suicide" when he encounters an ancient sin eater who offers absolution outside the Church, and who has been manipulating events -- like the priest's romance with a troubled woman who attempted to kill him -- in order to make the priest his successor.
