About this movie

Ram, the local village Romeo, is a colorful, charming yet dramatic vagabond. Leela, on the other hand, is an unbridled and passionate village Juliet. The only thing in common between these two strangers is their families' hatred for each other. The two communities have been sworn enemies for 500 years and their own kin falling in love with each other is worse than any storm that could befall them. When Ram and Leela see each other for the first time, their worlds collide. Wars are fought and destinies get written in blood, forever. Set in a land of guns and vengeance, against a magnificent musical backdrop, Ram and Leela fight the world to live their own dreams. What will happen when they declare their love to the world? Will their families relent or will Ram and Leela carve their own destiny?

One of Bansali's best pictures so far. It is loosly based on Romeo and Juliet so you already know the premise of the story here so no surprises really. What makes this different is the visual styles and soundtrack. Bansali uses color in his movies to convey meanings in his films. Blues during sadness, reds during fighting or festivals, greens in neutral scenes and this film contains all those. The sets are elaborate lending even more of a feast for the eyes. There is excellent use of humor and seriousness at the right times. The chemistry between Deepika and Ranveer is spot on. The music and dance scenes are very elaborate and appropriate. Even the item number with Priyanka Chopra added some entertainment value though if left out would not make any difference to the movie. Even though you know the overall plot, there is enough here to keep you engaged. A small amount of content may not be appropriate for small kids, but is OK the for rest of the family. The only issue I had is the hype leading up to the movie was a bit over the top. I would watch this again and again, but I only give it an 8 on a scale of 10 which is good still. Not in my top 10, but will be a classic Hindi movie.

The music is good but otherwise it's a truly terrible film. Among other issues that I had with the movie is that Ranveer's character is an "adult entertainment" store owner with no redeeming qualities which really takes away from the romantic vibe you want from the lead a story like this. Actually neither character was particularly compelling & neither was their love story. I definitely wasn't sad about the Romeo & Juliet ending.

LOVE IT! it is in the top two of my favorite Hindi films and is right up there with classics like Jodha Akbar. it is of course pretty predictable as it follows the Romeo and Juliet format seen in so many films, but it doesn't stop you from getting caught up and invested in the characters. it is also not really a kid friendly movie id say at least thirteen and up because there is a lot of guns involved and the characters are not particularly careful with them, there are several deaths and there is even (spoiler) an attempted assault. But all in all a stunning and spectacular film.
