About this movie

LET THE SPECTACLE ASTOUND YOU! In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Mackintosh produced a unique, spectacular staging of the musical on a scale which had never been seen before. Inspired by the original staging by Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, this lavish, fully-staged production set in the sumptuous Victorian splendor of London's legendary Royal Albert Hall features a cast and orchestra of over 200, plus some very special guest appearances.

The price is right, but Ramin Karimloo does not look the part to me! Enjolras from Les Miz, yes, but he needs a few more years under his belt, or a little less edginess to play the Opera Ghost. Yes, I mean less edginess. The Maria Bjornson production was not ready for his aquiline profile, even if he had played the Phantom for a long stint in the Village to rapturous audiences. I watched the entire thing free on YouTube two years back, but I doubt you could find that now. Buy the soundtrack instead

Great music (as always, the Overture is the best part). The voices are good, but a little harsher than in the movie, and there is too much screaming and yelling. It's overly dramatic. The music flows well, but the play does not. Don't get me wrong, I love POTO, but this didn't quite sit well with me.

This is one of the few things my sister and I bond over. We adore the production, and is far better than the movie with Gerald Butler (although I'm not unopposed to rewatch that every other year). Once a year, my sister and I sit and watch this. We almost always cry at the end, because that's how this movie affects you. The actors were great, everyone that was part of the production was great. And this is one of my favourite productions of this musical. I highly recommend you watch it, whether you're a musical fan or not.
