About this movie

Based on the Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize novel, featuring Robert Francis, Van Johnson, and Fred MacMurray as shipmates during WWII, aboard a destroyer-cum-minesweeper. Humphrey Bogart, in one of his greatest performances, boards the ship as her new captain and immediately establishes both his power over the men and his neurosis. It's a good movie but a very poor adaptation. I had seen the movie many times in the past and always enjoyed it but I always had this odd feeling that something was missing and after reading the book I can see why. Much of the book was left out of the movie leaving the characters feeling rushed and incomplete instead focusing on the romantic story. The best advice I can give is to either enjoy the movie or the book but don't do both. The movie does have some great footage at sea (and a pretty convincing typhoon sequence) and a stirring soundtrack so if you don't expect too much you will enjoy it but the book is a classic that deserves a better screenplay than it gets. I haven't seen the tv movie from 1988 which focuses on the trial alone so I can't compare the two versions but just going by the actors in it I don't hold out much hope they can compare too the charisma of Bogart and Van Johnson. There is still a possible great movie waiting to be made on a the classic book.
