About this movie

True Believer is an engrossing thriller set in New York's Chinatown. After 10 years defending every petty drug dealer in New York City, the last thing lawyer Eddie Dodd (James Woods) expected was to be fighting a murder case. Until now... Pressured by his idealistic and enthusiastic apprentice Roger Baron (Robert Downey Jr), Dodd finds himself defending a young Korean doing hard time for a crime he didn't commit. Motivated by a belief in their client's innocence, Dodd and Baron find themselves fighting for justice and the ultimate truth against the city's entire legal system. It's a fight they cannot afford to lose... © 1989 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

this film is truly one of the finest films made in the 80s. James Woods is at his finest, particularly in the courtroom scenes, where he commands the room. He goes from cynical "reformed idealist" to a reborn true believer in his cause, and the transformation is a lot of fun to watch. Also, a young Robert Downey Jr. in one of his first "adult" roles. Do yourself a favor and watch, if only for the story itself, which is based on a real life case. You'll enjoy this one, I promise. An overlooked gem of a movie.
