About this movie

When ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, his son Tim (Justice Smith) embarks on a journey to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world— they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Detective Pikachu is a very visually pleasing film. As a live Pokemon movie it does an amazing job of animating all your favourite Pokemon. Overall the plot is not that engaging and the characters aren't very well defined. Once again a Pokemon movie relies on Mewtwo as a main plot point. He seems invicible and able to stop or fix anything. I think a smaller scale story with more heart, jokes and Pokemon battles.

First off 4k playback was a mess. It was distorted constantly. All other resolutions play fine. Secondly, my kids both loved it. They were thoroughly entertained. The story is simple and the acting is mediocre but boy the effects were really well done. everything looks fantastic. Wait for standard rental to save some bucks since 4k doesn't work anyway.

A great movie for fans of the Pokemon games, and a joy for viewers in general. I grew up playing the Pokemon games from the Gameboy to the 3ds and I didn't expect this movie to be good or funny. The trailers seemed generic though cute. But boy was I laughing hard throughout the film. Ryan Reynolds was a great choice for Pikachu, and the Pokemon and how they were used was creative as heck. Definitely recommend.
