When a tragedy puts an the end to her short-lived career as a superhero, Jessica settles in NYC and opens her own detective agency, called Alias Investigations, which seems to be called into cases involving people who have special abilities. Suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, Jessica wants to do good, but her primary interest isn't in saving the world, it's saving her apartment and getting through each day. Based on a graphic novel intended for adults, this is not a superhero story for the kids.

What a waste. I can't stand it when a series has a really strong beginning and then completely botches the ending. In fact, episodes 9 through 13 were so annoying. Jessica Jones starts off as such a strong character, and then in typical fashion she starts to waffle and hesitate because apparently no one can write a female main character that actually knows what she wants or have any strongly held beliefs. It's hugely insulting. Killgrave assaulted and violated her repeatedly, he did the same to countless others, and Jessica knew that he would continue to do so until she inevitably killed him. Finally, when she does what was obviously necessary since episode 1, we get this sad sack pity party of an ending because Hollywood can't stand the idea that maybe a woman can have conviction and make the hard choices without hating herself. How can we call this fair representation when even the main character doesn't believe in herself? This kind of low-grade misogyny is just the worst.

This season was so well-written, well-cast, and so well done all around, nothing that followed this Herculean effort could measure up. I think the flaw of the shows was that the writers tried to address the character flaws, rather than let those flaws drive the story. They had too many threads that they had to bring together too quickly, so it felt rushed.

Jessica Jones is Marvel's most fully-formed creation, and as a result, my favorite show. Realism at its best. Jessica is a seriously badass private investigator who's struggling with PTSD after a traumatic past, but she won't let that stop her from protecting herself and the people she cares about. Dark, action-packed and and a feel-good show, all in one. Can't wait for the second season!
