How to ruin your favorite movies/TV shows

So, after watching the new Prison Break, the new Alien movie, and seeing trailers for the bajillion 80s movie reboots/continuations, I got to thinking that maybe the movies aren't actually the problem.

I mean, sure, a lot of them aren't very good (and some are just terrible... I mean seriously Prison Break season 5 is a total joke... not that its even on the same level as Alien or Star Wars but that's beside the point...)

Now that all of use who were kids in the 80s and 90s have money to spend (in theory), movie companies, TV studios, and game developers are scrambling to cash in on our nostalgia.

I mean, its not all bad. Some reboots, remakes, or franchise updates have been quite good. (Star Wars The Force Awakens and Rogue One were pretty great)

But, there are far more bad ones than good ones. (Fuller House, Girl Meets World, Indiana Jones... you get the idea)

Really, its just the fact that our feelings of nostalgia are misplaced. We THINK these feelings come from the movie, the TV show, the video game.

But actually, its from the time and place, what was happening in our lives, what was happening in the news, who your friends were, and so on.

Trying to capture our nostalgia based on just the product itself is doomed to fail, because we aren't 10 or 13 or 16 anymore, and the fact that every few years the "nostalgia generation" changes, it ends up so we have fewer new ideas and just a bunch of rehashes of old ones.
