Homestar Runner Video Essay

After cartoons got popular in the late 90s, studios started handing out stricter rules about what they could or could not do.
With so many kids watching cartoons again, like Animaniacs, Powerpuff girls, and so on, executives were worried about the off-color
satirical jokes that so many of these cartoons had had.

This led to many creators either leaving cartoons, or just not going there in the first place.

Right around the same time, 1999-2000-ish, Flash was just becoming a thing on the internet.

And this gave us Homestar Runner. This single cartoon has influenced the entire modern world of cartoons and animation.

What we see now with Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman, the Adult Swim cartoons, can all be traced back to Homestar Runner and
its weird, referential, 4th wall breaking humor.
