L'Histoire de l'Inde moderne est indissociable non seulement des britanniques, mais également des marâthes : peuple méconnu en Europe ayant dominé, contre toute attente, le sous-continent durant près d'un siècle avant la conquête coloniale du sous-continent. Leur Histoire, de leur soulèvement contre les occupants islamiques du sous-continent, à la montée en puissance de ce peuple hindou dans une Inde dominée par le grandiose et puissant Empire Moghol, est extraordinaire et absolument fascinante.
