Transcript:
While working on the SNES version of Star Fox, Shigeru Miyamoto was inspired to try a 3D version of Mario. Miyamoto planned to use the SNES's "Super FX" chip, initially calling the game Super Mario FX. Though the game was then shifted to the Super Mario 64, not because of system limitations but because the 64 controller had more buttons.
During this same time, Nintendo third party developer Argonaut Software, which had helped develop the Super FX chip, began work on their 3D platforming demo using Yoshi as the lead. Miyamoto rejected the game when pitched to him but used it for inspiration on his own title. That Yoshi prototype went on to become the Playstation and Saturn game "Crock: Legend of the Gobbos".
One of the game's first and biggest projects was setting up its camera system, a revolutionary choice that became a standard for platformers. Initially the game used an isometric view similar to the one seen in Super Mario RPG. Traces of this can still be found in the Bowser levels of the game.
The game went on to instant acclaim both critically and commercially, becoming the best selling N64 game of all time and ensuring that Nintendo would continue to make Mario games forever. And ever. Until the end of time.
Have fun!
