TRANSCRIPT:
Back in the ancient land of 1986 Poland, Andrzej Sapkowski had never
considered writing, besides some work translating sci-fi. However,
when a fantasy magazine called Fantastyka ran a short story contest,
Andrzej submitted his first ever; a tale of a mutant hunter named
Geralt otherwise called a "Hexer". While he came in third place, the
story was a hit and Sapkowski set to work writing more small tales,
creating a saga about this man Geralt that eventually spun off into
numerous products including a TV show, comic book, and most
importantly a videogame.
That project, started in 1996 by Polish studio Metropolis, was led by
game director Adrian Chmierlarz (who would later go on to co-own
People Can Fly). He renamed the term "hexer" to the
still-slightly-confusing term "The Witcher." The game was cancelled,
but the name stuck.
Later in 2002, videogame distributors Michał Kiciński and Marcin
Iwiński started up a new Polish studio under the name CD Projekt RED.
Their game used a modified engine from BioWare and the staff focused
their attention on custom textures in levels, motion-capture
animation, and improved physics and character combat. The Witcher released in 2007 to critical acclaim, spawning two direct sequels: Assassins of Kings and The Wild Hunt. Have fun!
