In 1970s Japan, super robots fought evil aliens in your kid's favorite TV shows, but Sunrise animator Yoshiyuki Tomino, saw potential. Inspired by the exosuits in Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers, he recast goofy robots as weapons of war, created relatable human antagonists and researched realistic technology like O'Neill Cylinders to legitimize the epic space setting. The REAL robot genre was born when Mobile Suit Gundam debuted in 1979.

Unfortunately, the audience, expecting lame robots, forgot to tune in so Gundam's sponsors cut the episodes to 39. Tomino's team pleaded for 43 to finish the story, but it was still cancelled. Not only that, Clover’s metal Gundam Toy line was… not great. Gundam was dead… until a little toy company called Bandai created Gunpla.

As named by fans, Gunpla were cheap plastic models of the show's mobile suits which fans could build and paint themselves, and they were hooked. With renewed interest, Tomino recut the series into theatrical films and fans swarmed the Japanese box office.

Gundam has since become synonymous with Japanese culture from dozens of series and video games to commemorative stamps and giant statues. Unlike Macross and Beast King GoLion, Gundam even reached American audiences without being rebranded! As robotics pushes forward, engineers, researchers and heads of NASA cite Gundam as inspiration because who wouldn't want a kick-ass war machine with a face. Have fun!
