The Government is committed to closing down old asylums and caring for the mentally ill in the community.-But as thousands of beds are lost for ever, more and more of the mentally ill find themselves out on the street, and many end up in prison.
Polly Toynbee reports on the plight of the mentally ill, and asks whether closing mental hospitals so quickly leaves them with nowhere to go.
