Après Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger et Jared Leto, c’est au tour de Joaquin Phoenix d’incarner le célèbre Joker et ce n’est pas une mince affaire. Avec son film, le réalisateur Todd Phillips revient aux origines d’Arthur Fleck, avant qu’il devienne le plus célèbre ennemi de Batman.
Pour se préparer à jouer ce personnage si particulier, Joaquin Phoenix confie s’être penché sur les effets secondaires des 7 médicaments que s’administre le Joker, pour être au plus près du scénario. Le résultat, un personnage extrêmement maigre qui a exigé que Joaquin Phoenix suive un régime alimentaire très strict.
Autre caractéristique du Joker, son rire incontrôlable pour lequel l’acteur a du énormément travailler. Pour Joaquin Phoenix, le Joker « C’est un personnage difficile, un film difficile qui ne fournit pas de réponses ou de solutions faciles. »
