Les récifs coralliens : trésors en péril !
Entourés d'une équipe de scientifiques de l'Institut de Recherche et de Développement, ils nous font découvrir les 1600 kilomètres de récifs qui enserrent un immense lagon aux eaux translucides et abritent un écosystème marin d'une richesse exceptionnelle. Mission :Ce sont des colonies de petits animaux à tentacules qui sont à l'origine des récifs coralliens. Ces minuscules bestioles -- qu'on appelle des polypes - vivent regroupées par milliers à la surface d'un immense squelette de calcaire. Avec le temps, ce squelette s'érode, se creuse, se remodèle… et finit par offrir à la flore et à la faune marines une diversité d'habitats exceptionnelle. Imaginez ! Une espèce marine sur trois vivrait autour des récifs coralliens ! Eponges, oursins, poissons chirurgiens ou poissons papillons, mérous, murènes, raies ou requins… Rien que dans les lagons du sud-ouest de la Nouvelle Calédonie, on a déjà recensé 20 000 espèces !
