Franchir les Alpes : le plus grand tunnel du monde
Chaque année, 80 Millions de voyageurs et 130 Millions de tonnes de marchandises transitent à travers l’arc alpin. Cette barrière naturelle, à la frontière de 4 pays - la France, l’Italie, la Suisse et l’Autriche- est l’un des plus grands carrefours d'Europe. Fred et Jamy nous emmènent visiter le chantier du Saint Gothard, un tunnel de 57 km de long, creusé entre le Nord et le Sud de la Suisse. Il devrait être achevé en 2017 et sera alors le plus long du monde. Avec l'élargissement de l'Union européenne, le trafic de marchandises y est en constante augmentation et la pollution aussi. Pour désengorger les routes et les voies ferrées, de nouveaux tunnels ferroviaires sont en construction ou en projet. Ils permettront de faire voyager les camions sur des trains. Mission : Contrairement aux premiers tunnels alpins creusés dans les crêtes des montagnes, les nouveaux tunnels sont construits aux pieds des Alpes. Ces chantiers sont titanesques.
