Antonio Alcántara se encuentra con una inesperada sorpresa en el Ministerio: Don Luis Altamira, el padre de Marta y subsecretario de Agricultura ha dimitido. Esta es sólo una de las consecuencias de la detención de su hija y de Toni. Antonio se teme lo peor, si el subsecretario cesa, él será el siguiente. La intranquilidad del hombre va en aumento cuando escucha los rumores que corren en la imprenta de un posible cierre del negocio.
El desconcierto se vive también en la Iglesia. El cura Eugenio, al ir a celebrar misa, se encuentra con que el templo ha sido ocupado por empleados de Perkins, dispuestos a hacer un encierro allí. No tarda mucho en presentarse una dotación de grises con la intención de un desalojo inminente. La intervención del cura logra templar los ánimos, pero sólo será una tensa vigilia, en la que policías y huelguistas convivirán en la iglesia a la espera de órdenes de arriba.
