Le 31 octobre 1968, Donald Crowhurst, un navigateur anglais inexpérimenté, s'élance à bord de son trimaran pour tenter de remporter la course en voilier la plus difficile au monde. Mais alors qu'il est rapidement dépassé par les évènements et accumule beaucoup de retard, Donald a une idée : mentir et faire croire au monde entier qu'il navigue à toute vitesse et peut remporter la course ! C'est ainsi que débute son cauchemar qui va le faire sombrer dans la folie.
