Un homme est retrouvé pendu dans les douches d'une centrale pénitentiaire. Le défunt, un comptable accusé d'avoir détourné 10 millions de francs, s'appelait Mayer. La thèse du suicide est exclue, puisque l'homme attendait une libération qui lui aurait permis de récolter enfin les fruits de son opération. Les soupçons se portent alors sur les autres détenus et notamment Campana, qui assurait la «protection» de Mayer.
