In the early 2000s two men, Marc "Maliken" DeForest and Jesse Hayes started up a videogame company in California. Their first project was a game called "Savage: The Battle for Newerth". It was an interesting hybrid game that was completely online and mixed aspects of the RTS and FPS genres and was released in 2003. That game went freeware to 2006 and has been turned by its community into multiple other games.
In 2008 they created the sequel, titled Savage 2: A Tortured Soul. S2 Games independently produced and distributed the game which centered around two teams centered in a large arena, trying to destroy each other's command center.
These two games, referencing the world of Newerth, culminated in S2's biggest title Heroes of Newerth, which was derived from the WC3 mod Defense of the Ancients, otherwise known as DotA. HoN was released in the summer of 2010 and carried over the core ideas with a graphical upgrade and design improvements. The developers originally released Heroes of Newerth as a paid title, but went free-to-play roughly a year later, setting more of the standard that the MOBA-genre uses today.
Now based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, S2 Games is developing their next entry into the genre, a second generation moba dubbed Strife.
