After achieving critical acclaim for their work on Demon Souls in 2009 and Dark Souls in 2011, From Software was approached by Sony Computer Entertainment with an invitation to co-develop a title. With this, producer Hidetaka Miyazaki proposed development to be on the next generation console.
Like the Souls series, From Software wanted the game to be challenging. They wanted players to feel like they could die at any moment and feel a true sense of accomplishment in living through each encounter. At the same time, they wanted the game to be distinctly different from the other series; not only through a new story and gothic horror setting, but through its gameplay as well.
Miyazaki felt that the use of swords and shields in the Soul series combat system made for a much more passive combat experience. The Victorian era setting as opposed to a medieval one allowed the team to remove the sluggish platemail and cumbersome shield and add a firepower component, leading to the more aggressive and active style of combat.
With the success of their previous titles lingering, From Software released Bloodborne not just for the eager Demons Souls fans, but for new players to enjoy suffering through as well. Have Fun!
