Modern Coda to Astolfo's Sojourn to the Moon
by Evan Puschak (The Nerdwriter)
And then I wonder'd if Astolfo saw
The long-lost tenets of Common Law,
Or if under some garland chanc'd to find
The sea-cast fragments of unquiet minds,
Discarded like flatteries, proffer'd toward
That bone white kingdom without a lord;
As a fool to a stranger's care consigns
His own children, and foremost rhymes.
Would the knight, please, with Orlando's vial,
On his chariot span the starlit aisle,
And bring to those who cast off and forgot
The essence of this urban thought?
Not really sure how to describe this one, sort of an esoteric prose-poetry piece consolidating some ideas that have been swimming around in my head (namely, big cities and the increasing effect anomie) and some themes I'm attempting to treat in the novel I'm currently working on. With a bit of Ariosto thrown in for good measure; I love reading and reciting old greek/latin/italian poetry. I find that most of the ideas we're dealing with now have good, almost prescient metaphors in those early works. Go read Orlando Furioso if you have some time; it's awesome.
