Le 19 février 197, la ville de Lyon, Lugdunum pour les Romains, a été le théâtre d’une des plus grandes batailles de l’Antiquité. Cet affrontement est tellement destructeur que Lugdunum a pratiquement été rasée, la ville n’est jamais parvenue à se relever complètement de cette tragédie. Après la conquête des Gaules par Jules César, Lugdunum devient la capitale des Gaules, signe de son importance. Après cette bataille, pillée et incendiée, de nombreux habitants doivent la quitter, si bien que cent ans plus tard, elle perd même ce statut de capitale des Gaules !
