La drôle de vie des langues mortes

Pour parler des langues, on utilise souvent un vocabulaire du vivant : il y aurait des “familles” de langues, des “langues-mères”, dans un “arbre généalogique” des langues. D’ailleurs, certaines langues seraient menacées, vivantes, voire… mortes ! Mais c’est quoi, une langue morte ? On pourrait dire que c’est comme nous : une langue, mais qui n’aurait plus ses fonctions vitales. En tout cas, on peut dire que les historiens, les archéologues, les chercheurs du passé, les langues mortes, ça les connaît ! C’est même un sacré enjeu, parce que, pas le choix : il y a des sources qu’on est bien obligé de lire dans leur langue d’origine ! Et voilà pourquoi on fait un petit épisode dessus…
