Quel est le point commun entre la Bible, le Coran, la série de BD Alix, le jeu vidéo Baldur’s Gate ou encore la série Stargate SG1 ? Et bien la réponse tient en 4 lettres seulement : BAAL. Dans tous les cas que je viens de citer, ce mot sert à désigner tantôt un dieu, tantôt une idole, tantôt un démon, voire simplement un antagoniste. Mais quelle que soit la nature de ce qui est désigné sous le terme de Baal, à chaque fois il renvoie à quelque chose de négatif, de sombre et de sanglant. Pourtant à travers l’Histoire humaine, ce nom n’a pas toujours été associé à quelque chose d’aussi péjoratif, bien au contraire. Avant d’être considéré comme un démon, Baal était bel et bien vu comme un dieu. Alors comment est-on passé de l’un à l’autre ? C’est ce qu’on va voir, en retraçant le parcours d’un mot, à travers 4 000 ans d’histoire de l’humanité…
