Quand on dit « Mafia », on dit beaucoup plus de choses que quand on parle simplement de la pègre, du milieu du crime organisé. Le mot est super chargé : la Mafia, ça porte un imaginaire, une esthétique, un récit qui doit évidemment beaucoup au cinéma de Francis Ford Coppola ou de Martin Scorsese. La Mafia vue par Hollywood, elle porte un paquet de clichés : c’est un crime en costard qui hésite toujours entre le minable et une élégance de façade. On fait péter des rotules pendant que les marmites de pâtes bouillonnent dans l’arrière-cuisine, d’accord, mais avec un œillet à la boutonnière et un chapeau à 500 balles. Si l’image de la Mafia est liée aux Etats-Unis par notre imaginaire, c’est pourtant, on le sait bien au fond, un produit d’importation ! Parce que la Mafia américaine, c’est à peu près aussi italien que les pâtes à la carbonara ! Alors, quand comment est-elle née ?
