Après la Première Guerre Mondiale, la communauté internationale impose des règles très strictes à l’Allemagne dans la construction de ces navires de guerre. La kriegsmarine développe alors de nouvelles techniques pour réussir à construire une série de bateaux d'exceptions, dont le célèbre Graf Spee : un navire corsaire voguant entre l’Amérique du sud et la Grande Bretagne dans le but de couler des navires marchands.
