Bei einer Studentenfete in der DDR wird Marlene, eine junge attraktive Frau, ermordet. Zu ihren zahlreichen Verehrern zählten auch die beiden Freunde Pelitz und Dörner. Die Freunde, zugleich Konkurrenten im Studium, bemühten sich beide um Marlene. Aufgrund von Indizien wird Pelitz als Mörder verurteilt. 1994 wird er entlassen - in eine Welt, die er bisher nur aus Zeitungen und Medien erleben konnte. Für den Mann aus dem Knast ist Dörner der einzige Anlaufpunkt, und es scheint, als hätte der alte Freund ihn erwartet. Hilfsbereit unterstützt er Pelitz, damit dieser Fuß fassen kann. Pelitz' einziges Ziel jedoch besteht darin, seine Unschuld zu beweisen und den Mörder von Marlene zu finden.
