Der Tenor Austen wird während der "Tosca"-Premiere vor den Augen der Zuschauer auf der Bühne erschossen. Die beiden Kommissare Herbert Schmücke und Herbert Schneider, selbst im Publikum, stoßen bei den Ermittlungen auf den jungen Komparsen Robert, der ein Motiv und auch die Möglichkeit gehabt hätte, Austen zu töten. Doch Robert bleibt verschwunden. Eine zweite Spur führt zu dem angesehenen Bürgermeisterkandidaten Löbel, der aber für den Mord an seinem Freund Austen ein Alibi hat, ebenso für den folgenden zweiten Mord an seinem ehemaligen Chauffeur Quast. Schmücke und Schneider gelingt es schließlich, Robert aufzuspüren, sein Vertrauen zu gewinnen und mit seiner Hilfe den Mörder zu überführen. Damit wird auch ein zehn Jahre zurückliegendes Verbrechen aufgedeckt und doch noch gesühnt.
