Am Tag vor Alfonsos Ermordung wollte eine ältere Frau mit Corrado, dem Sohn des Grafen, sprechen. Da Corrado nicht da war, sprach der Graf selbst mit ihr und schien nach dem Gespräch zutiefst betroffen. Die Unbekannte wird erdrosselt aufgefunden und als Margherita Lanzoni identifiziert. Auch das Zimmermädchen Desiree stirbt eines gewaltsamen Todes.
Unter den Familienmitgliedern hat der spielsüchtige, unvermögende Bruder Antonio ebenso ein Motiv wie der Schwiegersohn Carlo, Ehemann von Alfonsos Tochter Maria. Als Fabbri mit Hilfe von Rex in einem Geheimgang Spuren von Corrados Stiefeln findet, gilt der junge Mann als Hauptverdächtiger, zumal er wegen seiner polnischen Verlobten mit seinem Vater immer wieder Streit hatte.
