The story follows twelve princesses who mysteriously wear out their shoes every night, despite being locked in their bedroom. The king, puzzled by this, offers a reward to anyone who can uncover their secret. A young soldier, aided by an invisibility cloak, follows the princesses and discovers they travel through an underground realm to dance with twelve princes each night. The soldier reveals the secret to the king, breaking the enchantment. As a reward, he chooses one of the princesses to marry, and they all live happily ever after.
