City of God: The Fight Rages On Season 2: Cenoura Returns on November 8. Here's What to Know Before the Premiere

The countdown is almost over. In just 11 days, on Sunday, November 8, 2026, "Cidade de Deus: A Luta Não Para" (released in English as "City of God: The Fight Rages On") returns to HBO and HBO Max with its second season. HBO renewed the Brazilian crime drama right after its premiere on August 25, 2024. Filming wrapped back in early 2025, so fans have waited a long time. The wait has also produced the biggest casting news since the show began: Matheus Nachtergaele, who played Cenoura in Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund's 2002 film, is reprising the role. If one of the best sequels to a film classic slipped off your radar, this is the week to catch up.

Here's a quick refresher if you need one. The series picks up the story of "City of God" about twenty years after the film. Wilson, better known as Buscapé (Alexandre Rodrigues, back in the role that made him famous), returns to the community where he grew up. He's no longer just a kid with a camera. He's a photojournalist, and he narrates how the conflict between police, drug traffickers and militias has changed the neighborhood. Season 1 was six tense episodes. Bradock's release from prison set off a bloody turf war with the drug boss Curió (Marcos Palmeira), with Barbantinho (Edson Oliveira) trying to broker peace between them. Meanwhile, Wilson and the reporter Lígia dug into a conspiracy linking the corrupt Reginaldo (Kiko Marques) to arms traffickers. The season ended with Berenice (Roberta Rodrigues) running for City Council while threats closed in around her.

That's all you need to know going in, because Season 2 changes the board completely. The new episodes start after Curió's death, and his empty throne sets off a violent fight for control of the territory. HBO's first teaser put it simply: a chess game is about to begin. That sounds right for a season that seems less about street-level shootouts and more about strategy, alliances and betrayal. The new episodes were shot in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, a sign that the story reaches beyond the community's borders. This season looks at rising violence, political corruption and community resistance, and at how crime, politics, justice and culture shape one another.
