Der Maibaum wurde in der Tatnacht gestohlen. Verdächtig ist schnell Gerda Weinberg, die nicht nur als Leiterin der Mangfelder Blaskapelle den Maibaum-Raub beauftragte, sondern auch Tobias' Geliebte ist.
Auch Xaver Dopfer, ein Furchinger Landwirt, gehört zu den Verdächtigen. Sein Bruder kam vor einem Jahr ums Leben - weil die Stetzinger Feuerwehr zu spät kam, wofür er Tobias Vogl verantwortlich macht. Auch der Stetzinger Landwirt Gregor Zwillinger ist verdächtig, da sein Acker nicht in lukratives Bauland umgewandelt wurde - im Gegensatz zu dem von Gemeinderat Tobias Vogl. Und Schulden hat Zwillinger obendrein. Die drei haben ebenso wenig ein Alibi wie Tobias' Frau Angelika, die in der Tatnacht eine Schlaftablette genommen haben will.
