Vanessa ist frisch verliebt. Als sie mit dem Studenten Fabian abends eine romantische Ruderbootstour auf einem See unternimmt, beobachtet sie, wie am Seeufer ein Mann eine Frau erwürgt. Vanessa verständigt umgehend ihre Kollegen. Doch als die SOKO anrückt, ist die Leiche verschwunden. Am Tag darauf muss Vanessa erkennen, dass sie hereingelegt worden ist, denn Olivia, Fabians eifersüchtige Exfreundin, hat ihren eigenen Tod im Rahmen eines Kunstprojekts gemeinsam mit ihrem vermeintlichen Mörder Jimmy inszeniert und Vanessa dabei die Rolle der aufgeregten Zuschauerin zugedacht, die sie unwissentlich auch perfekt gespielt hat. Als Olivias Kunstprofessor Hagen ihr von der Aktion erzählt, ist Vanessa stinksauer. Nicht nur auf Olivia und Jimmy, sondern auch auf Fabian. Doch dann findet Vanessa, die am nächsten Tag von einer entschuldigungswilligen Olivia per SMS noch einmal an den nächtlichen See bestellt worden ist, die Leiche Olivias ein zweites Mal. Und dieses Mal gibt es für Vanessa nicht den Hauch eines Zweifels, dass Olivia tot ist. Doch als die SOKO am Fundort eintrifft, fehlt von Olivia auf mysteriöse Weise abermals jede Spur. Und weil Vanessa fürchtet, ihre Kollegen könnten sie und den doch etwas konfus anmutenden Sachverhalt nicht wirklich ernst nehmen und allenfalls als zweiten Akt eines überdrehten Kunstprojektes betrachten, ermittelt sie stur auf eigene Faust - aber auch auf eigenes Risiko. Und dieses erweist sich schon bald als unkalkulierbar hoch.
