Karl Padberg wird morgens auf einer Wiese vor einem Rohbau aufgefunden. Er hat den Sturz von einem Balkon nicht überlebt. Spuren an seinem Körper weisen auf Fremdeinwirkung hin. Mit einer anonymen E-Mail wurde er an den Tatort in seiner zukünftigen Wohnung gelockt. Karl Padberg lebte seit Jahren in einem Mietshaus als Mietnomade und verklagte regelmäßig aus Paranoia und Boshaftigkeit seine betagte Vermieterin sowie Nachbarn und Ämter. Als seine Vermieterin, Elisabeth Mommsen, nach einem Streit einen Herzanfall erlitt, hatte sein Nachbar Marco Teichmann öffentlich gedroht, ihn umzubringen. Jedoch will er zur Tatzeit bei seinen Freunden Carina Mommsen und Nedim Kara gewesen sein. Indizien belegen allerdings das Gegenteil.
